SYNOPSIS

Between conscious and unconscious, between said and unsaid, between forces of nature and human reason. However, between one thing and another, this is the location of The Park, the place in which Cássio Markowski invite us to enter through a series of drawings, using different techniques on paper. A place that can be inside oneself at, the same time, outside. Anyway, a place in Between.

“The appropriation of images is the starting point for a discourse that is multidisciplinary, whose intention is to create a flow between that which is personal to me and that which is global, between the present and the past. Influenced from early on by literature, I usually work with images that are taken from books on botany, assorted handbooks, comic books, the internet, advertisements, newspapers, magazines, and family photos. By combining them, these images begin to exist in a new context, a territory imbued with a certain theatricality where an emotional and personal memory emerges as a common thread.”

BIOGRAPHY

Cássio Markowski Studio / CM11 (b. 1972) is a Brazilian visual artist whose practice has been characterised by a constant negotiation between different means of expression, where his own ethnic and cultural hybridism has emerged as an implicit issue.

Working with analogical and digital techniques, his narratives, autobiographical and fictional alike, unfold through drawings and objects meant to spark associations. He composes conceptual images that explore the poetry of visual language, creating a poetics in which the oneiric relationship between human being, fauna and flora predominates.

With a degree in Visual Arts from the Arts Centre of the University of Santa Catarina State (Brazil), he has also completed the master’s degrees in Research and Creation, and Performing Arts and Sciences at the University of the Basque Country (Spain). After having also lived in Poland, he is currently based in Almada, Portugal
