The individual exhibition SINCE WE LAST SPOKE by Maria Corvacho, will open on September 13 from 6 pm. to 8.30 pm, and will be on view until October 5. The admission is free.
This exhibition marks the artist’s return to the realm of artistic expression after the transformative experience of motherhood. This is not an exhibition about being a mother; rather, it is an exploration of womanhood in its strength and exhaustion, the multiple selves that inhabit her, and an attempt to give shape to the thoughts and emotions that define her new identity.
In this show, the artist delves into the depths of her mind—rapid and constantly in motion, always processing ideas and reflections, but also an endless list of seemingly mundane daily tasks. Artistic creation becomes a way to calm this incessant flow, using vibrant colors, enigmatic symbols, and swift, instinctive strokes that capture the urgency and freedom of her creative process.
SINCE WE LAST SPOKE is indeed a reunion with herself: a dialogue with the person she left behind and the new person she is becoming. Each work reflects this journey, where the loss of one identity is balanced by the gain of another, resulting in a multifaceted woman who embraces the different versions of herself. Thus, the exhibition becomes a celebration of this reunion, a visual testament to the search for balance and meaning, where internal chaos is expressed and, in a way, ordered through art.
BIOGRAPHY
Maria Corvacho was born in Porto (1989) and although she did not initially pursue art, her path eventually led her back to what was her first passion. In 2018, she finally decided to fully dedicate herself to what truly moved her, and since then, she has worked as an illustrator and painter.
Her style is mutable, reflecting her constant search for new forms of expression and interpretation of the world. In addition to illustration and painting, she also explores other forms of artistic expression, such as ceramics and embroidery.
Color is a fundamental element in all her creations, while the figure of the woman is always present, symbolizing the strength, beauty, and complexity of the feminine. Her art is a constant search for beauty, whether in the subtlest details or the most grandiose expressions. Her inspiration comes from the small moments of daily life, the nature that surrounds her, and her own dualities and introspections. Furthermore, her perspective is marked by an ironic view and sharp skepticism, but also by a romanticism that shines through in every piece.
With a keen and sensitive eye, Maria Corvacho transforms the everyday into art, capturing the essence of what it means to be human with all its contradictions and beauty.
